Ooooh! Sebastian O!

Sebastian O est une bande dessinée de Grant Morrison et Steve Yeowell (Ed. Vertigo), publiée en 1993. Un des premiers exemples de "steampunk", elle raconte les aventures de Sebastian O, un jeune assassin flamboyant de la période Victorienne à Londres, et sa traque de ceux qui l'ont condamné à la prison pour crimes moraux. Même si sa moralité pourrait être réprouvée (il tue un policier de sang froid), Sebastian reste néanmoins un sympathique et élégant gentleman. En lisant cette BD, je suis tombé sur ce St Sébastien bien caché...

Sebastian O is a comic book series by Grant Morrison and Steve Yeowell (DC's Vertigo imprint), which was published in 1993.
An early example of "steampunk", it tells the story of Sebastian O, a young flamboyant assassin in a Victorian era London and his attempts to track down whoever condemned him to prison for his moral crimes. While certainly morally unsound (he shoots a police officer in cold blood) Sebastian is nonetheless a sympathetic and smart gentleman.
It's by reading this comic book that I discovered this hidden St Sebastian...

Soudan - Soudain, Saint Sébastien

Ce vendredi de Week-End islamique, j'ai choisi de visiter le musée du "Republican Palace" de Khartoum. Il est en fait installé dans une église anglicane de 1912, rescapée de la période du Condominium Egypto-British. Quelle bonne surprise de découvrir ce vitrail de Saint Sebastian!! Il est, à ma connaissance, le seul de cette ville... Anshouf!

Last Friday, islamic Week-End, I chose to visit the Republican Palace Museum of Khartoum. It was recently established in an Anglican Church built in 1912, at the beginning of the Egyptian-British condominium rule. What a great surprise to discover this stained glass of Saint Sebastian!! As far as I know it is the only one in the whole city... Anshouf!

Ethiopia - St Sebastian on an island

De retour d'une semaine en Éthiopie...
C'est trop court pour en faire l'inventaire complet en St Seb...

Just came back from Ethiopia where I spent 1 week...
That's too short to find all the St Sebastians.


J'ai commencé par le trouver 2 fois à la capitale Addis Ababa avec pour sous-titre: "Saint Georges" (cf photo ci dessus à gauche: ce St Georges est clairement une copie du San Sebastiano de Sodoma)! St Georges est véritablement la star du pays (dont il est le patron), il donne même son nom à la bière locale. Mais de là à utiliser l'image de notre martyr bien aimé, c'est un peu abusif!

At the beginning, I found him twice in Addis Ababa's churches... There, he was titled Saint George (see above picture on the left: this St George is obviously a copy of San Sebastiano de Sodoma)!! St George is a true star in the country (he's its patron): he even gave his name to the local beer... But using St Sebastian s picture is a bit abusive!

I finally brought this St Seb from Azwa Mariam monastery.


Les monastères orthodoxes construits sur les petites iles du Lac Tana sont recouverts de peintures de saints locaux ou importés, d'un style naïf, très coloré, qui peut dater du XVIe Siècle.

The Lake Tana orthodox monasteries, built on small islands, are richly painted with pictures of local or imported saints. Their style is naive, very colorful, and are sometimes dated XVIth century.

Ethiopia - St Sebastian in the desert

Malheureusement, on ne trouve que très peu de St Seb en territoires musulmans. Il n'est même pas vénéré par les coptes égyptiens. Je prépare mon prochain voyage en Ethiopie où j'ai de grands espoirs: en témoigne cette photo d'une icone éthiopienne trouvée à la nouvelle bibliothèque d'Alexandrie, dans un livre appelé "Ethiopian Icons"...

Unfortunately, very few St Seb in Muslim territories. He is not even venerated by the copts of Egypt. I prepare my next trip to Ethiopia where I hope I'll find some more. I got this picture of an Ethiopian Icon, in the brand new library of Alexandria, in a book "Ethiopian Icons"...
